Part-time Music Director/Organist
$6,000 - $8,000/year

The Music Director/Organist is the chief musician for the congregation and responsible for the musical interpretation and presentation of the worship services at Svea Lutheran Church. This individual will possess a desire to serve Christ’s church, its people, and the Gospel of its salvation in Jesus Christ. Music is a means by which the assembled Christian community communicates the Gospel to the world and one another. All musical selections then ought to reflect the reality which we as a Christian community have come to live out. In as much as is practical, the choice of selection for our musical proclamation is nearly endless but also must be carefully considered in conversation with the pastor and at the suggestion of congregational committees. Our worship services rotate between traditional liturgical settings and more contemporary settings. We consistently give priority but not limitation to the resources and hymn tradition of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America.
The primary responsibilities for this position include, but are not limited to:
- Leading the musical aspects of the worship service primarily by piano or organ accompaniment.
- Learning and preparing the weekly liturgy as directed by the pastor.
- Instructing of the praise team in current and new music.
- Communication with the audio visual team each week concerning projected lyrics to hymns.
- Communication with the pastor and other worship leaders concerning the needs of the service(s). This would include need for time away as well as substitute musicians.
This position allows for one Sunday a month absence with additional Sundays potentially available as negotiated with pastor and Worship and Music Committee. The Music Director/Organist would be responsible for finding a substitute for Sundays absent. Advise with planning the Sunday service as well as the occasional services throughout the year (notably Thanksgiving Eve, Advent, Christmas and Lent) in communication with the pastor, and the Worship and Music Committee. There is a need for flexibility in this position to account for the ways in which the Christian community lives and grows through its worship life.
The qualifications we are seeking include:
- An in-depth knowledge of the Christian musical tradition, including hymnody, and contemporary Christian praise music.
- Ability to lead the gathered assembly through worship with musical accompaniment.
- Ability to play both pipe organ and piano.
- Be able to communicate through email as well as use other digital resources as directed by the Worship & Music Committee.
Supervision of the position will be through the pastor and congregational council. This position will be compensated in conversation the pastor and congregational council. For the above description Svea is offering no less than $6000 as an annual stipend. An increased amount could be negotiated dependent on experience.
